This song is the lead single from their third studio album. It is their most prominent signature song, and it reached the number-one spot on charts in more than 25 countries.

The song was considered the pop ballad of the year and was nominated for three Grammy Awards, including Song and Record of the Year.

Their song "Larger Than Life" was going to be the lead single of the album, because their first two albums had an upbeat lead singles, but the group decided to choose a more mature direction with "I Want It That Way" being a mid-tempo track.

An alternative version of the song with different lyrics recorded in January 1999 was included in some early demos of the album.

The lyrics of this song don't make much sense. Not only some critics said this, but also members of the band confessed that it is indeed so: e.g. Kevin Richardson explained in an interview, "Ultimately the song really doesn't make much sense." One of the co-authors Andreas Carlsson also said that the song was a play with words.

The music video for this song was nominated for four MTV Video Music Awards and won Viewer's Choice award.

This song was used for the soundtrack of the film "Drive Me Crazy" (1999).

Weird Al Yankovic parodied this song under the title "eBay" singing about buying strange things on eBay.

British boy-band One Direction performed a live cover of this song during their "Take Me Home Tour" at a Stockholm concert in 2013.
